The Hand-Dyeing Process

手書き図案

Hand-drawn design

Design ideas are conveyed to a kimono design artist, who creates a hand-drawn design which is used to make a screen pattern.

色の調合

Blending colors

The colors are blended by combining different kinds of pigments and resins. The possible color combinations are limitless.

紙を置く

Laying the paper

Moistened base paper is placed on the dyeing plates. Determining the position and placing it precisely is important.

染める

Dyeing

The screen pattern is placed on the base paper, and colors are layered onto it one color at a time with a squeegee (large spatula).

友禅紙

Yuzen Paper

Yuzen Paper, which takes its name from that of the historical fan painter Miyazaki Yuzensai, can be made in a wide variety of patterns, ranging from bold, colorful, modern, and stylish to subdued and classical.
Pigments are applied by hand one at a time with a large spatula using a pattern roughly 1-meter-wide and 70 cm long, repeating the process for each color.
